No, if you never see me another time in your life, if I die in the morning, I’ll die saying one thing: the ballot or the bullet, the ballot or the bullet.
-Malcolm X
Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Both envisioning a greater America, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. uttered these beautiful and stirring words during a defining moment of American history. They and countless others wondered would the democratic ideals of justice, equality, and peace of our forefathers finally be realized. Nevertheless, as millions of Americans can attest dismantling the evils of society continues to be a dream, and inequality, poverty, and injustice are still ever present in our America. However, on the eve of his birthday, King and millions of Americans’ dreams for a better world finally seem to be within hand’s reach. After the historic win of presidential candidates Senator Barack Obama in the Iowa Primary and Senator Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire Primary, it is magnificently clear that America is on the verge of realizing these once elusive dreams. The upcoming election just might signal a departure from our painful history of yesterday and foreshadow a better tomorrow.
It is with this hopeful eye to the future that the Black Student Alliance at Yale presents the 13th Annual Black Solidarity Conference “The Ballot or the Bullet: Revitalizing the Revolution.” From February 28 to March 2, we are proud to present a forum on the upcoming presidential election led by some of the nation’s leading scholars, activists, and elected officials. Commencing with an evening with America’s most renowned black commentator Tavis Smiley, the Black Solidarity Conference will wrestle with the most important and controversial issues in the upcoming presidential election. The Black Student Alliance at Yale will offer a forum for students from across the nation to engage the issues that shape our lives and seek to impact our futures together in unity, in peace, and in solidarity.
The Black Student Alliance at Yale proudly invites you to join us as we attempt to help realize the dreams Dr. King espoused. Join us as we seek the better America that our forefathers in the struggle for equality sought before us. Join us as we journey to a new and stronger tomorrow.
